Research

I interviewed my neighbors to gain insights on BHS's new target audience. Both of them struggled with space, and wanted more for their homes.

Analysis

After transcribing my interviews with both Hayleigh and Elishia I distilled my observations into insights and then found directions and inspiration to move forward.

Both of the had big aspirations for their homes but were extremely tight on space or the means.

They struggle with visual clutter and it causes them stress, I found this to be a deterrent for them when buying new things.

Their homes are very multifunctional and they often perform multiple tasks and leisure activities in one space.

Hayleigh more than Elishia lived a minimal modern aesthetic but they both had a taste for vintage and antique style details.

Concept development: light which would not take up too much floor space, fit under existing furniture, and lights that could serve a multipurpose. Some of my concepts had multifunctionality such as sockets or an easy change from task to ambient use.

Developing a framework for a light with no base which pushes against the floor and the ceiling to stand and experimenting with mechanisms.  I used a ceiling height stucture to test the hights for the shades

Final design utilises large adjuster on the bottom with a pin, and a fine adjuster towards the top with a thread and paint-free polished steel design which can be fully disassembled and recyled to be as sustinable and low cost as possible.

To develop Rufus further I will be integrating the cord into the frame by boring a whole through the centre of the custom thread.
